Given the nature of our work, story and composition, we at Fundavenyc are firsthand witnesses of our community’s journey and thus intimately understand the reality of the situation. We would like to take this opportunity to address some of the biggest myths surrounding the economic effect of immigrants in New York City.

Myth 1: Immigrants take jobs away from native New Yorkers.

Research consistently shows that immigrants do not take jobs away from native New Yorkers, in fact immigrants often fill positions overlooked or considered undesirable by the native workforce. They tend to complement the existing workforce by filling labor market gaps and taking on jobs in industries with labor shortages, ensuring a vibrant and diverse job market.

Migrant involvement spans many sectors, including healthcare, hospitality, construction, and retail, contributing to the overall growth and diversity of the labor market. In many cases, immigrants help create new jobs by starting their own businesses, which creates a positive cycle. A 2021 report by the Anti-Defamation League shows that states with large numbers of immigrants report lower unemployment rates for everyone.

Myth 2: Immigrants put a strain on New York City’s public resources.

According to the New York Mayor’s Office, recent statistics show that more than 70% of asylum seekers and recently arrived migrants have found employment within the first six months of arriving in New York. The results demonstrate they are self-sufficient and by supporting them at their most vulnerable, we accelerate their ability to integrate into our labor ecosystem.

Immigrants are not just workers, but consumers as well. They buy local products and services, which bolsters businesses and the economy.

Immigrants also contribute more in taxes than they receive in public benefits, meaning they more than cover the cost of public education, healthcare, and more. The American Immigration Council shows that in 2019, immigrants collectively paid more than $492 billion in taxes, including over $30 billion paid by undocumented immigrants. Everyone pays sales taxes on purchased goods and property taxes on home purchases, and more than half of all undocumented immigrant households file income tax returns using Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITIN).

Myth 3: Immigrants reduce the wages of native New Yorkers.

Extensive studies show that there is little to no evidence of long-term negative wage impacts due to immigration in New York City. As the Insights and Analysis on Economics and Finance (IMF) indicates, “migrants bring economic benefits for advanced economies”. Their entrepreneurial ventures and economic contributions create new job opportunities and stimulate wage growth for immigrants and natives alike.

Conclusion

Immigrants are an invaluable asset to the New York City economy. They do not replace native workers, but instead fill essential roles, ensuring that the city’s industries thrive. Contrary to common misconceptions, immigrants contribute significantly more in taxes than they receive in public benefits, including through purchasing goods and supporting public resources. In addition, the participation of immigrants in the local economy stimulates job creation and wage growth for all workers.

By recognizing and appreciating the economic contributions of immigrants, New York City can continue to build on its legacy as a global center of innovation, cultural exchange, and economic opportunity. Adopting policies that encourage immigrant integration, entrepreneurship, and workforce development is essential to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and prosperous urban landscape.

New York City is and always has been a beacon of hope and opportunity, fostering a vibrant economy built on the diverse skills, entrepreneurial spirit and culturally rich contributions of generations of immigrants.
